How to grow brunfelsia
Overview
Brunfelsia is a dense, evergreen shrub grown for its fragrant, purple flowers that fade to white. It provides reliable seasonal interest and links bolder feature plants in sheltered gardens.
Varieties
- Brunfelsia pauciflora 'Floribunda' — Compact form with abundant flowers, ideal for smaller gardens.
- Brunfelsia pauciflora 'Macrantha' — Larger flowers and more vigorous growth.
Soil Preparation
Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0). Enrich with compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Growing Guide
Plant Brunfelsia in a position with morning sun and afternoon shade, in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Space 1–1.5m apart. Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Avoid planting in heavy clay or waterlogged areas.
Care
Feed in spring and summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. Prune lightly after flowering to shape and remove spent blooms. Mulch well to keep roots cool and moist.
Companion Planting
Pair with shade-loving plants like gardenia, camellia, and ferns. Avoid placing near plants that require full sun or dry conditions, such as lavender or rosemary.
Common Pests & Risks
Scale insects and spider mites can occur, especially in dry conditions. Control with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent fungal issues.
Troubleshooting
Yellow leaves: often from overwatering or poor drainage; reduce water and improve soil. Brown leaf edges: caused by dry air or underwatering; increase humidity and water. Leaf drop: sudden temperature changes or cold stress; protect from frost. Poor flowering: insufficient light or over-pruning; ensure part shade and prune lightly.
