How to grow buckwheat microgreens
Overview
Buckwheat microgreens are the tender shoots of Fagopyrum esculentum, harvested within 7–14 days for their mild nutty flavour. They are a fast, high-yielding crop ideal for indoor trays or sheltered garden beds. Consistent moisture and good airflow are critical to prevent damping off.
Soil Preparation
Use a well-draining, fine-textured seed-raising mix with pH 6.0–7.0. Garden soil is too heavy and can introduce pathogens. No heavy amendments required; a light mist of seaweed solution after harvest can encourage a second cut if desired.
Growing Guide
Sow seed densely on fine seed-raising mix, barely cover with soil or vermiculite. Keep at 18–24°C with bright indirect light; avoid direct afternoon sun. Mist daily to maintain moisture without waterlogging. Harvest when first true leaves appear, cutting above the soil line with clean scissors. For continual supply, sow a new tray every 5–7 days.
Sowing
Sprinkle seed evenly over the surface of moist seed-raising mix, pressing lightly for contact. Do not bury deeply; a thin cover of vermiculite or nothing is fine. Germinates in 1–3 days at 18–24°C. Direct sow only; transplant is not used for microgreens.
Care
No fertiliser is needed for this 7–14 day crop. Ensure trays have drainage holes and are not left sitting in water. Thin seedlings if overly dense to improve airflow. Rotate trays daily to promote even light exposure and prevent leggy growth.
Common Pests & Risks
Mould and damping off are the primary issues, caused by overwatering or poor air circulation. Use sterile seed mix, avoid overcrowding, and run a small fan nearby. Fungus gnats may appear in moist soil; reduce watering and set yellow sticky traps to control them.
Harvesting
Harvest when the first true leaves have fully expanded but before the stem becomes fibrous, typically 7–14 days after sowing. Use sharp scissors to cut just above the soil line; this allows some regrowth if the base remains moist and intact. For best flavour and texture, harvest just before use and rinse gently.
In the Kitchen
Use fresh in salads, sandwiches, smoothies, or as a garnish. The mild, nutty flavour and crisp texture complement many dishes. Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days; harvest just before use for maximum freshness.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves: insufficient light or overwatering; move to brighter spot and reduce moisture. Damping off (seedlings collapse at base): improve airflow and reduce humidity; discard affected tray and start fresh. Slow growth: temperature too low; maintain 18–24°C. Mold on soil surface: increase ventilation and reduce misting frequency. Leggy stems: inadequate light; use grow lights or move to a brighter windowsill.
