How to grow amazon elephant ear
Overview
Alocasia amazonica is a tropical foliage plant grown for its dramatic, arrow-shaped leaves with prominent white veins. It thrives in warm, humid conditions with consistent moisture and protection from direct sun.
Soil Preparation
Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.0) in a rich, organic potting mix with good drainage. Add perlite or coarse sand to improve aeration. Avoid heavy clay or water-retentive soils that cause root rot.
Growing Guide
Plant in a rich, well-draining potting mix or garden soil amended with organic matter. Space bulbs 30–50 cm apart, with the crown just above the soil surface. Choose a position with bright, indirect light or morning sun only; avoid harsh afternoon rays. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during active growth. In cooler zones, grow in a pot that can be moved to a warm, sheltered spot in winter.
Care
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a half-strength balanced liquid fertiliser. Remove spent leaves at the base to encourage new growth and reduce pest hiding spots. Repot every 2 years in spring to refresh soil and prevent root binding.
Companion Planting
Pair with other tropical foliage plants like Philodendron, Monstera, or ferns for a lush, layered look. Avoid planting near heavy feeders like citrus that may compete for nutrients.
Common Pests & Risks
Spider mites cause stippled leaves and fine webbing; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Scale insects appear as brown bumps on stems and leaves; remove with a soft cloth or horticultural oil. Root rot from overwatering or poor drainage is common; ensure pots have drainage holes and soil dries slightly between waterings.
Troubleshooting
Yellow leaves: overwatering or poor drainage; check soil moisture and reduce watering. Brown leaf edges: low humidity or direct sun; increase humidity or move to shadier spot. Drooping stems: underwatering or root damage; water thoroughly and inspect roots for rot. Stunted growth: cold temperatures or nutrient deficiency; move to warmer spot and feed with balanced fertiliser.
